The search continues
Saw yet another rental this past weekend. Nice couple living there, like them, they like us, TINY FREAKING APARTMENT. Really small. It's a good fallback, for sure. But oh my god tiny, not a first choice. Saw another one, a studio on the ground floor of a house, with every likelihood of becoming the entire bottom floor upon the other lower remnant moving out. Guy in charge is a musician, really cool cat. It was even within a mile of my work. Started filling out paperwork, then got to the section about pets, and realized that I hadn't heard Michelle ask about pets, so I did. No pets. Shit. So, we shall continue to search.

It's really frustrating, it seems like everything out here is either no pets or no couples. I hate it. Only the one place I had my heart set on in the beginning, and the tiny freaking apartment, have been pet and couple friendly. It's really quite disheartening. I hate dealing with stuff like this. I really do. I'd rather just get it over with and be done with it. But it's either no couples or no pets. Geezus. I can't get rid of Marty, I've raised her since her eyes first cracked open, for goodness sake. I can't just abandon her now. Shit, I'd rather sleep in my car than give her up for an apartment. And every day that goes by with another rejection is another day closer to that eventuality. Eh, whatever. I'd save a fortune on utilities and be able to save money that much faster. Not the worst way to climb to the top, really. Heh, maybe get myself a Vanagon, live out of that for a while. That could be kinda dope for the short term. Weekend trips would certainly be easier, just take my living quarters with me! Could wake up to some really nice views along the coast.

Meh. I need hugs. Lots of them.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

I've more or less missed it, but...
Happy Halloween to all, and a happy 30th birthday to me! And a happy birthday to my friend Nikki, as well.

Ok, this is another call to my more technical friends: I need help with telephone wiring. I'm looking to install a POTS splitter into my wiring for my DSL/Uverse, but I'm getting fucked up on the color coding of the phone wiring, the instruction sheet for the splitter is completely useless, and Google is not being a team player right now. So anyone who knows a little something about phone wiring, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.

Dear Supreme Court....
In the matter of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association...

...thank you. It was a LONG read, but what I found the most even-handed ruling on video game legislation I have ever read.

Also, thank you for inciting a potential coronary episode in Jack Thompson. I hope to read his obituary in sequel to this document in the near future.

Yours truly,

A Gamer

Of Smallville...
...the ending was kind of anemic. Lackluster. Like they scrambled to write it in a very short amount of time.

Someone once complained that Superman gets more and more overpowered on a parabolic curve, and that by 2018 he will be more powerful than God. It seems that he was right, because somehow he was able to physically move a PLANET. And the final showdown against Darkseid? It was...wait, was there even a showdown? I'm not sure. All I know is that the show was so full of holes and so empty of finer details, it just ended up more shallow than the average episode in some areas.

And Tom Welling is a bloody douche. I know the guy has always rejected the "flight & tights" thing, but this was the LAST EPISODE. The one where Clark Kent finally becomes Superman. And we didn't get a *single* clear look at him in the costume. Bloody putz. Not to mention he never even got called "Superman." Closest they got was "Man of Steel." What a cheat. I would be honored to portray Superman. Hell, to be remembered for the rest of my days as Superman, like Christopher Reeve, would be nothing short of an unimaginable honor for me. But what the hell do I know, right?

Overall, it wasn't a horrible end. I enjoyed watching it quite a bit. It was just...disappointing.

Excellence in...what was the question?
Sometimes I have to wonder about my boss. We had a discussion the other day about the engine in my car vs. the engine in the same year's GTI. I kept telling him they're the same, he kept saying the GTI got a higher compression engine than mine. That's not possible, but whatever. Anyway, I did some research tonight, and yes, the Rabbit convertible got the GTI motor in '84, there is absolutely no difference in the engine, or the fuel injection system, only in the exhaust system. In other words, they made the convertible a boss pimp little bitch that year. He's been doing this for over 40 years and I've got him schooled this time.

So I have this problem.

Every so often, I find my system volume raising itself to maximum and not coming back down. In fact, if I manually move the slider to the bottom in the sound mixer utility, it climbs back to max on its own. I *think* it's happened on its own in the past, but largely it happens when I use the volume control knob on my Sidewinder X6 keyboard. I thought this might be a problem with Intellitype or even my keyboard (as since some random Intellitype update way back when, the keyboard volume control is all fucked up, will dance up and down if I turn the knob more than a crawl in speed) which is apparently a problem with Intellitype that the customer base is well aware of but Microsoft doesn't seem to acknowledge. However, upon research of this auto-raising volume problem, I find that people from all over the computing spectrum have encountered this issue. It happens in Vista, in 7, on a desktop, on a laptop, doesn't matter what. So, needless to say, I'm not suspecting the computer anymore. The only common theme amongst all the systems is that they all seem to use the Realtek onboard audio and associated drivers. But can I find a culprit? Hell no. No one seems to be able to even find a cause, let alone a cure. Grr! Frustrated!

I don't suppose anyone out there knows where I can get a SPDIF to analog 5.1 DAC? I'm being cheap and lazy and my PC surround speakers sound FANTASTIC. I want my consoles to sound equally FANTASTIC.

This time yesterday, I was barely able to pull 2.0 Mbps, and not even consistently, with double the ping (not really bad) and 13ms jitter. Lesson to myself: when data speeds start getting really inconsistent, call my provider. All it took was a service reset.

Kind of random...

Anyone remember this badboy? I still have one. And I *never* knew how to play it. Can anyone explain how it works to me? I don't want to waste the money to put a battery in it if I don't even know how it works. I haven't been able to find a copy of the instructions online to save my life.

Momentarily angry, and no I'm not going to explain.
Fuck you. Yeah, you. You self-righteous assholes. There's a hell of a lot more in this world than what you think you're seeing, and it's starting to get fucking exhausting for me to have to deal with you. All you give a shit about is what you see, not what anyone else sees. It doesn't matter if you're staring at a brick wall, you judge what's behind it like you have any fucking clue what's happening back there. Well, fuck you. Fuck you for being too fucking lazy to think outside of your own little box for thirty seconds and consider that maybe you have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

And while I'm at it, fuck you for getting upset at me for doing it. Fuck you for trying to tell me I'm wrong for trying to see what I'm not seeing, and fuck you for trying to tell me it's a waste of time. You're assholes, and you need to die.

There, I feel much better. Carry on.

Thanks to all that have wished me a happy birthday, and birthday wishes to all my friends throughout the year. Here's to hoping 28 is a boon year.
